Two major smartphone manufacturers have announced that they are changing plans for the largest annual mobile industry show – MWC. It is scheduled to take place in Barcelona at the end of February.
First, ZTE, Chinese telecom and smartphone maker, cancelled its press conference because of the coronavirus explosion in China. The company representative mentioned both transport problems and visa delays, as well as unwillingness to cause discomfort to MWC members.
Later, South Korea’s LG refused to attend the exhibition at all, explaining the concern for the safety of employees and visitors. Instead, the company will present new mobile products at selected events in the near future.
MWC has long been a major platform where Asian manufacturers can demonstrate their latest developments to the world. The organizers of the event – GSMA association – insist that despite the coronavirus epidemic it will go as planned.
The day before, a list of measures to protect visitors was published: increased disinfection of all surfaces through which the virus can be transferred, enhanced medical support for the event, an information campaign, free distribution of disinfectants, consultations on preventing the spread of infection for restaurants and hotels etc.
