Cristiano Amon, Qualcomm brand manager, predicted that smartphones would soon die. According to him, in 2 years they will slowly leave the market of mobile gadgets, and users will have access to a new device. The success of this evolution directly depends on the spread of 5G technology.
This is not an alternative, but an evolution
In an interview with Business Insider, Mr. Amon said that top current manufacturers are already developing a new device. In the near future it will become as widespread as smartphones in the present time. Appearance of these devices that will gradually reduce the demand for phones to zero.
According to the expert, now Microsoft, Facebook, Amazon and Apple have focused on the development of virtual and augmented reality (VR, AR) technology. As soon as commercial 5G networks start functioning in most countries of the world, the above brands will be the first to launch smart glasses on the market. They will have nothing to do with the current prototype. These will not be bulky helmets, but the most common, familiar to the look of glasses.
Cristiano Amon notes: it will not be a replacement smartphone, but just a device of a completely new type. But it will definitely be higher on the evolutionary technological stage.
Smart glasses will be suitable for everyday use. They will provide all necessary communications, access to the Internet, the use of social networks – in general, all functionality of current smartphones. And that’s not all.
For example, smart glasses will make it easier to identify the user. Retina scanning is one of the most reliable authorization options. This will provide instant access to the necessary confidential information. Voice calls with hologram display of the caller is also quite feasible technology.
If there is 5G – there will be progress
Much depends on the development of 5G: it is the high speed and stability of the connection with a minimum of delays that will allow the implementation of all plans. With high-speed connectivity, almost all communication processes can be moved to the cloud, making future gadgets lighter and thinner.
Amon argues that these are not his fantasies, but real predictions. He has personally seen prototypes that can already surprise. And it is true. For example, Apple is preparing a presentation of its own AR-headset by 2023. Amazon is already trying to produce mass solutions (not very impressive yet). Microsoft focuses on the business segment. Facebook has entered into collaboration with Ray-Ban. They intend to show the result of joint work until 2025.
