Bluetooth technology is very popular among manufacturers of all kinds of devices, but Canadian startup Spark Microsystems is already preparing original replacement of the usual standard. Company has announced Ultra WideBand (UWB) chips for wireless headphones and other accessories, which significantly increase the connection speed and energy efficiency of gadgets compared to traditional solutions.

Principle of UWB is to transmit data over short distances in an ultra-wideband frequency range. Due to short pulses, signal is not affected by interference created by other equipment. In addition, technology makes it possible to track positioning of objects: This functionality is already available in iPhone 11 and BMW and Volkswagen car keys.

Bluetooth alternative

Technology itself has been known for a long time, but has not yet been widely implemented. Spark Microsystems offers manufacturers of peripherals to use UWB chips in gamepads, headphones and other devices, including headsets of the augmented and virtual reality, as well as gadgets of the Internet of things. Among the advantages of this solution the company mentioned low signal delay and 10 times lower power consumption compared to Bluetooth.

According to the developers, startup already has ready-made solutions in the form of SR1010 chips with a frequency range from 3.1 GHz to 6 GHz, and SR1020 (from 6 GHz to 9.5 GHz). Announced interconnection speed of future innovations is up to 20 Mbps, and price is not more than $1. Start of deliveries is scheduled for the third quarter of 2020.
